Bolyai Prize

The János Bolyai International Prize for Mathematics , named after János Bolyai , is an award given by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences for excellence in mathematics . The prize is awarded every five years. After 1910, the award ceremony was suspended until 2000. The winners are selected from among mathematicians who have published new and significant results over the past ten years.

The academy founded the Bolyai Prize in 1902 on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the namesake. It was first awarded in 1905. The resumption of the award ceremony after a long break was decided as a contribution to the World Year of Mathematics 2000 and the upcoming 200th birthday of Bolyai.

Price of the same name

Since 2001, another Bolyai Prize has been awarded every two years, also by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In contrast to the International János Bolyai Prize for Mathematics, it is only awarded to Hungarian scientists and is an interdisciplinary prize that covers all natural sciences.
