Adele Benedetta Craveri (born September 23, 1942 in Rome ) is an Italian modern and literary historian.

Life

Benedetta Craveri is a granddaughter of Benedetto Croce . She received her Laureate Degree in Literature in Rome in 1969 (with a dissertation La formazione del gusto neoclassico e André Chénier with Giovanni Macchia), directed the cultural program of Radio Spazio Tre from 1976 to 1986 and taught French literary history and language at the University of Tuscia since 1988 in Viterbo (from 2001 as associate professor) and since 2005 full professor of French literature at the Università degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa in Naples.

It deals with French literary and cultural history of the 17th and 18th centuries and especially with the role of women (salon ladies), literary letter culture and literary communication. Among other things, she wrote a book about the Marquise du Deffand and the collar affair .

She also writes for La Repubblica, the New York Review of Books, and the Revue d'histoire littéraire de la France. Her book on salon culture won several Italian awards.

In 2017 she received the Prix ​​mondial Cino Del Duca , in 2006 the Prix ​​du rayonnement de la langue et de la littérature française , and in 2003 the Prix ​​Saint-Simon . In 2004 she became Officier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic.
