Trompsburg is a place in the South African province of Free State . It is the administrative seat of Kopanong Township in Xhariep District .
geography
Trompsburg is a rural place near the national road N1 . In 2011 it had 1880 inhabitants. The townships Madikgetla and Nordmanville, which had 3458 inhabitants, belong to the place .
history
The place was founded in 1891 on the Middelwater farm by Jan and Bastiaan Tromp. In 1902 he received parish status. Initially it was called Jagersfontein Road after the nearby town of Jagersfontein, then Hamilton after Sir Hamilton Gold-Adams , the governor of the Orange River Colony from 1907 to 1910; eventually it got its current name.
Economy and Transport
The main line of business is agriculture, especially the keeping of merino sheep .
Trompsburg is not far from the N1, which connects Johannesburg and Cape Town , among others . The regional road R704 leads northwest via Fauresmith to Koffiefontein , the R717 in a southwest direction to Philippolis and Colesberg . Trompsburg station is located a few kilometers west of the city on the Bloemfontein - Springfontein railway line , which runs almost parallel to the N1. The station is used for freight traffic. Passenger trains from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth and East London run through there.
