Kopanong ( English Kopanong Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the Xhariep District , Free State Province , South Africa. The administrative headquarters are in Trompsburg . Xolile Matwa is the mayor.

The name comes from the Sesotho and means "meeting point" and stands for unity, to promote cooperation.

In 2011 the community had 49,171 inhabitants. 71.5% of these were black, 18.2% colored and 9.4% white.

The first language was 36.8% Sesotho , 33.8% Afrikaans, 20% IsiXhosa , 2.3% Setswana and 1.8% English.
