Etienne van Heerden

Etienne Roché van Heerden (born December 3, 1954 in Johannesburg ) is a South African writer .

biography

Van Heerden was born on a farm in the Karoo in 1954, six years after apartheid was introduced , to an English-speaking math teacher and an Afrikaans-speaking sheep farmer . After his studies he worked as a lawyer mainly for black clients and got to know the grievances in the townships first hand .

After his 30th birthday, he began studying literature. In the 1980s he was a member of a group of Afrikaans-speaking authors who secretly met with members of the banned African National Congress . Today he teaches at European universities, such as Leiden and Antwerp , and is a lecturer at the University of Cape Town . He has two daughters with his wife, a doctor.
