action

The film documents a year in the lives of various actors in the US porn industry in the San Fernando Valley , where around 80% of US porn is filmed.

Belladonna - The Idol

She is considered the star and idol of the industry, even though she has never had plastic surgery. The film accompanies her to film recordings and gives her the opportunity to talk about her plans and dreams. In addition, she is also shown in her role as a mother.

Sasha Gray - The Rookie

At the beginning of the film, Gray is at the beginning of her career. When she turned eighteen, she moved to Los Angeles from Sacramento on what she claims to be revolutionizing the sex industry. She lives with her boyfriend, who has nothing to do with the industry but studied film and supports her career. During the filming of the documentary, she becomes one of the biggest stars in the industry and is eventually cast in a film directed by Steven Soderbergh .

Mark Spiegler - The Agent

Spiegler is one of the most successful and well-known agents in the industry. The future porn actresses live in his apartment and are arranged by him for shoots. He sees pornography as an industry and is interested in his clients being on time and staying away from drugs. He himself is looking for loyalty and friendship and is often disappointed in the industry.

Otto Bauer and Audrey Hollander - The Couple

Bauer has established himself as a fixture in the positions of producer, director and actor. On the set and at home, he runs a strict regiment that gives him the title “Mr. Rough Guy ” . His wife Audrey is first introduced by him as the next Jenna Jameson , because she has the necessary charisma and knows what matters. In the recordings, however, she seems increasingly depressed, so that the film credits indicate that she is doing better now. Both Bauer and Hollander are shown using drugs.

Mia Rose - The Starlet

Rose is in her early twenties and at the beginning of the film believes she has reached the goal of her dreams. She can have sex all the time and is paid for it. She wants to do this for as long as she can. After all of her old friends from her native Alaska turn away from her, her big sister is her only friend. When she disappears from the shared apartment at the end of the film, Rose seems to have lost much of her zest for life.

Jim Powers - The Punk

Jim is one of the busiest directors and cameramen in the business. He doesn't take himself too seriously and can laugh at his job. He rehearses twice a week with his punk band before booking another actress as " White Trash Whore" for his films.

Katja Kassin - The Pro

She came to the San Fernando Valley from East Germany and became famous for her fancy anal sex scenes. The mother who stayed at home constantly wants her daughter to return. During the shooting, Kassin terminates her contract with her agent Mark Spiegler; In order to earn more money, she tours through America at times, where she can be booked as an escort by fans .

Roxy Deville - The Spiegler Girl

Deville is also under contract with Mark Spiegler . She differs from the other girls mainly in that she doesn't want to make friends in the industry and is proud of her private life outside of the sex industry. Her dream is to make enough money to be able to afford a house and a family later. She doesn't believe in dreaming about an acting career in Hollywood and prefers to stay realistic. She categorically rejects anal sex scenes.

John Stagliano - The Legend

John Stagliano is one of the most influential producers in the American porn industry. After making a name for himself as a performer, he founded the production company Evil Angel Productions . He had a lasting influence on the aesthetics of porn film with the invention of the gonzo .

Dr. Sharon Mitchell - The Good Soul

She began her career as a porn actress in the mid- 1970s . After being raped and nearly murdered by a stalker in 1996, she retired from her career and studied medicine. When it became known in 1998 that an HIV- infected porn actor had infected several actresses with the disease, she founded the Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation ( AIM for short ). She advises performers on health and psychological issues and has been able to make HIV tests mandatory for many production companies.

Reviews

“His intense and often drastic portraits, supplemented by interviews with veterans of the scene like Dr. Sharon Mitchell, John Stagliano or Nina Hartley , who provide the theoretical superstructure, form a multi-layered, illuminating kaleidoscope of the porn industry. Hoffmann was recently nominated for the German Camera Prize , and rightly so . "

- Jörg Böckem : Spiegel Online

“Hoffmann shows the victims and the exploiters, the professionals and the dull, the broken and destroyed, the proud and the rebels. His film works without off-text. All information comes from the mouths of insiders. But as touching and revealing as the film is at times, no matter how much bigotry it is in the business - and among the viewers! - reveals: He presents porn as the hardest variety of pop. "

- Eric Pfeil : FAZ

“9to5 is not an accusation against the unworthy practices of an inhumane industry. Rather, it is a careful search for answers to essential questions. Do these women suffer, are they oppressed? "

- Johannes Gernert : Stern.de

“Certainly, such a direct, feature-length documentary of this kind has never existed before. And a picture is sometimes worth a thousand words. But Hoffmann fires up the voyeurism that he tries to denounce to some extent with this film. Or maybe it wasn't even his goal to criticize the - mainly male - pleasure in watching. Rather, '9 To 5 - Days In Porn' has become an aesthetic description of the situation. "

- Jan Schwarzkamp : Visions .de

“In his [Hoffmann] multi-faceted report, old and young stars of the industry have their say, who report on their exciting and humiliating experiences. However, he could have saved himself the epic bird sequences in between: That sex in front of the camera is hard work, has nothing to do with romance and is becoming increasingly extreme, is nothing new.
