Giorgos Kontogeorgis ( Greek Γιώργος Κοντογεώργης , Giorgos Kondogeorgis ; born November 21, 1912 in Tinos ; † November 9, 2009 in Athens ) was a Greek politician .

Life and politics

Kontogeorgis studied economics at the Athens University of Economics and in the USA. He worked in the public service and rose to general director in the Ministry of Commerce in 1963. He lost this position under the Greek military dictatorship in 1967.

Under Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis , whose conservative party Nea Dimokratia he belonged, he became Secretary General of the state tourism authority EOT and from 1974 to 1977 Deputy Coordination and Planning Minister. In the parliamentary elections in 1977 he was elected to the Vouli as a member of the Nea Dimokratia .

As Minister without Portfolio with responsibility for relations with the European Community from November 1977 to January 1981, he was a member of the Karamanlis government and the first cabinet of Georgios Rallis . He was thus significantly involved in the negotiations on Greece's accession to the European Community and signed the accession treaty on May 28, 1979 alongside Prime Minister Karamanlis and Foreign Minister Rallis.

After joining in early 1981, Kontogeorgis was the first Greek politician to become a member of the European Commission . From 1981 to 1985 he was Commissioner for Transport , Fisheries and Cooperation on Tourism in the Thorn Commission .

He later became Minister of Economics and Tourism in the interim governments of Ioannis Grivas from October 12, 1989 to November 23, 1989, and of Xenophon Zolotas from February 13, 1990 to April 11, 1990.
