Edgard Pisani (born October 9, 1918 in Tunis ; † June 20, 2016 ) was a French politician of the Parti Socialiste and EC commissioner from 1981 to 1984.

life and work

Pisani, whose family was of Maltese origin, came to Paris in 1936, where he graduated from the Lycée Louis-le-Grand and pursued a career in higher administrative service. Pisani was active in the Resistance during World War II and in 1944 took over a post as prefect of the police in liberated France. He then worked in the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defense.

From 1947 he was administrative director of the Haute-Marne department , from 1954 to 1961 senator and then until 1966 Minister of Agriculture.

From 1967 he sat in the French National Assembly and from 1974 to 1981 he was Senator for Haute-Marne. He then moved to the Thorn Commission as Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid . From 1985 to 1988 he was then High Commissioner for New Caledonia .

From 1988 to 1995 Pisani headed the Institut du monde arabe .
