The Saturdays are a British / Irish girl group founded in 2007 . They stand at Fascination Records, a since 2008 record label of Polydor , under contract. The five-piece band consists of two ex-members of S Club 8 , Francesca Bridge and Rochelle Humes, X-Factor participant Mollie King as well as Vanessa White and Una Foden. In 2008, they supported Girls Aloud's Tangled Up Tour . Their debut single If This Is Love was released at the end of July 2008. Since 2014 they have been taking a break.

Band history

2007 to 2009: Founding and Chasing Lights

The group was put together in 2007 through a casting for the record label Polydor Records . They got a record deal with Fascination Records , a subcontractor of Polydor. While accompanying Girls Aloud on their Tangled Up tour, they began work on their first studio album. They also accompanied the Jonas Brothers to a concert. The song If This Is Love was released as the first single . The song debuted at number 8 on the UK charts. The debut album Chasing Lights was released in October 2008. It reached number 9 and was later awarded platinum by the BPI. Although the Saturdays were very often compared to other British girl groups, such as the Sugababes or Girls Aloud, the debut album received mostly positive reviews. The second single from the album was the song Up on October 19, 2008 . It reached number 5 in the UK charts. The third single, Issues , reached number 4 on the UK charts. Both Up and Issues were awarded silver by the BPI. In March 2009 a cover of the song Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode was recorded for the charity Comic Relief , which was also awarded silver. The last single on the album was Work . However, this song clearly missed the top 10 with 22nd place. In 2009 the band was on tour for the first time as the main act. The tour, which included 24 shows, started on June 2nd, 2009 and ended on July 7th, 2009. In 2008 and 2009, the band promoted various products, including deodorants, tampons, cell phones and hair removal products.

2009 to 2011: Wordshaker and headlines!

In March 2009 the band started work on their second studio album. During their tour in summer 2009 they already presented two of their new songs, Wordshaker and One Shot . The second album, called Wordshaker , was released in October 2009. It reached number 9 on the charts and, like the debut album, was awarded silver. The lead single, Forever Is Over , was originally written for Kelly Clarkson . The singer Pink was also interested in the song. It reached number 2 on the British charts. The second and final single on the album was Ego , which reached number 9. Although the band didn't want to release any new songs in 2010, Rochelle Humes stated in an interview that they had been offered so many good new songs that they decided to release something. The band later confirmed that it would not be a full studio album, but an extended play, a mini album. The EP called Headlines! was released on August 13, 2010 and reached number 3 on the UK charts. The first single was the song Missing You , which was written by the German composer Lukas Hilbert , among others . After the second single, Missing You, had lost the battle for first place against a single by the American rapper Flo Rida , Rochelle Wieseman jokingly stated that she would have to work with the rapper first to achieve a number one hit in Great Britain land. A little later it was announced that Flo Rida would actually record some parts for a song by the band. The collaboration, the song Higher , eventually reached number 10 on the UK charts.

2011 to 2012: On Your Radar

At the end of 2010 the band announced that they were working on their third studio album. Over time it became known that they would work with a variety of different producers and artists, including Labrinth , Taio Cruz , the Danish pop band Alphabeat and Brian Higgins from the producer team Xenomania. The band described the new music as "different" and "heavy", and they would now make music for the dance floors. They also described the album as their most personal to date, as they had helped write many of the songs themselves. On November 21, 2011, the album called On Your Radar was finally released. It reached number 23 in the UK. The first single was digitally released on May 22, 2011, the song Notorious , which reached number 8. The second single All Fired Up was released on September 4, 2011 and reached number 3. Accompanying the album release was the song My Heart Takes Over . This reached number 15. After the release of the first single, a clothing line was released together with the British brand Miss Selfridge . It contained T-shirts with parts of the lyrics of the two songs Notorious and Higher printed on them. The shirts were created and designed by the band themselves. A big arena tour followed in 2011 with 14 dates.

2012 to 2014: Living for the Weekend and US projects

On May 14, 2012 the band released the song 30 Days , which reached number 7 in the UK charts. It was also confirmed that the band would be working on their fourth studio album. A release of the album in the USA is also planned. For this they signed a record deal with Island Def Jam and Mercury Records. Furthermore, from January 20, 2013, the reality show Chasing The Saturdays was broadcast on American television, which accompanies the band as they gain a foothold in America. However, due to unsatisfactory ratings, the show was discontinued after a season.

The next single on the album was the song What About Us , a duet with rapper Sean Paul , on March 15, 2013 . The song went straight to number 1 on the UK singles chart after it was released. The German release of the song took place on April 5, 2013, where it reached number 44. Furthermore, the reality TV show produced in 2012 was broadcast in German from May 6, 2013 under the name The Saturdays - The way up on the pay TV channel E! Entertainment HD broadcast. An EP of the same name as the show, which in addition to the song What About Us also contains the singles All Fired Up , Higher , Notorious and Ego , was released on January 27, 2013 in Great Britain, the USA and Canada. The third single was the song Gentleman on June 30, 2013. The German release took place on July 3, 2013. In the United Kingdom, the single reached number 14. The next single from the album was released on October 6, 2013, the song Disco Love . This premiered on August 19, while the accompanying video was released on August 26, 2013. B-sides include covers of the songs On the Radio by Donna Summer and Love Come Down by Evelyn King . One week after the release of Disco Love , on October 14, 2013, the band's fourth studio album called Living for the Weekend was released in the UK. Cover, artwork, title and track list were announced by the band on September 4th, 2013. The album was released on October 14, 2013 in the UK, where it reached number 10 on the charts. The last single on the album was the song Not Giving Up , which was released on April 4, 2014 and climbed to number 19.

Since 2014: "Finest Selection: The Greatest Hits", tour and band break

On August 11, 2014, the compilation album Finest Selection: The Greatest Hits was released, which included three new songs in addition to the 17 singles previously released. The song What Are You Waiting For? , which was made in collaboration with Xenomania, was released the day before the album on August 10, 2014. While the album again reached number 10 in the charts, the single only reached number 38, the band's weakest chart position at the time. Following the release, a tour followed in September 2014 that included 12 concerts across the UK. In December it was announced that the band would contribute the song Christmas Wrapping , a cover for The Waitresses , to the movie Get Santa . In March 2015, band member Mollie King confirmed that the band is currently taking a break to pursue solo projects and that no new music is expected before 2016. On April 1, 2017, Vanessa White announced that she was leaving the group.
