David James Gandy (born February 19, 1980 in Billericay in Essex , England ) is a British male model . He grew up in a working class family in Essex. His career began by winning a modeling competition on a television show. For several years Gandy was the face of the Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana , who used him for their campaigns and fashion shows.

In an industry dominated by skinny models, Gandy's muscular appearance moved some designers to set a more masculine standard in men's fashion. Its increasing popularity and recognition results in a diverse portfolio of magazine covers, editorials, interviews and industry awards. He is also involved in various fashion-related and personal projects, such as B. blogging for British Vogue , writing car reviews for British GQ , and developing various apps for mobile use and charity work.

Model career

Career

In his youth, Gandy wanted to be a veterinarian, but his grades were not enough to meet the requirements of the degree. While studying "multimedia computing", he worked for the British car magazine Auto Express, driving Porsches and Jaguars to the test track. Before he graduated from the University of Gloucestershire , a roommate enrolled him in a model competition hosted by ITV's "This Morning," hosted by Richard and Judy, without his knowledge . 21-year-old Gandy won this competition, which included a contract with Select Model Management in London.

In the early years of his career, Gandy modeled for various companies such as: Shiatzy Chen, 7 for all Mankind, Zara , Gant USA, Hugo Boss , Russell & Bromley, H&M , Carolina Herrera , Massimo Dutti and others. In 2006 he became the face of Dolce & Gabbana, where he played the leading role in their campaigns and fashion shows every year until 2011 and with female super models such as Gemma Ward , Scarlett Johansson and Naomi Campbell as well as with male models such as Noah Mills, Tony Ward and Adam Senn worked together.

Gandy became best known in 2007 with the advertisement for Dolce & Gabbana's fragrance "Light Blue" with Marija Vujovic (shot by photographer Mario Testino ), which was viewed over 11 million times and an over 15 meter billboard with him in Times Square . In 2008 he modeled for her calendar, which was photographed by Mariano Vivanco. In 2010 Gandy was in front of the camera for the second "Light Blue" campaign, this time with Anna Jagodzinska. He also made a short film with Helena Christensen for W Hotels called "Away We Stay".

In 2011 the Dolce & Gabbana fashion house published a 280-page illustrated book, "David Gandy by Dolce & Gabbana", which contains photographs depicting their collaboration over the years. In the same year Gandy was also photographed for four magazine covers and five editorials. In 2012 he had sixteen magazine covers and eighteen fashion editorial and modeled for Banana Republic , Lucky Brand Jeans, El Palacio de Hierro and Marks & Spencer . In addition, Gandy has been named representative for Johnnie Walker Blue Label.

In 2013, Dolce & Gabbana released the third "Light Blue" campaign with Gandy. Filmed once more by Mario Testino on Capri , this time with the Italian model Bianca Balti in the female role. British shoe brand Bionda Castana released a fashion film with Gandy called "David Gandy's Goodnight". In it he seduces some women who later discover that he has stolen their shoes. On September 26th, Gandy and Jaguar released a short film entitled "Escapism" in which Gandy drives some Jaguar models.

Fashion projects

In May 2012, Gandy spoke at a forum at the University of Oxford Union, including photographer Tony McGee, senior curator Claire Wilcox Victoria and Albert Museum , fashion advisor Frances Card and Dolly Jones, editor of British Vogue. Previous notable speakers who debated in the Oxford Union were Winston Churchill , Elizabeth II and Mother Teresa . That year he also released his David Gandy Men's Style Guide app , which offers style and clothing advice for men and which made it into the top 3 in the lifestyle market.

In September 2011, Gandy was named spokesman for the Luck Is An Attitude campaign by Martini, who launched their modeling competition on the Spanish Steps in Rome , which was opened specifically for the event. He was appointed to the British Fashion Council Committee to launch London Collections: Men as part of London Fashion Week 2012.

During the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, Gandy was the only man walking down the Union Jack- colored catwalk, alongside models Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss , Jourdan Dunn, Lily Donaldson , Georgia May Jagger, Karen Elson and Stella Tennant . to show off British fashion. To mark the occasion, he wore a bespoke gold suit by British designer Paul Smith . On November 19, 2012, Gandy was invited again to the Oxford Union, where he discussed "The importance of men's fashion" with Alex Bilmes, the editor of Esquire .

During the Vogue Festival on April 28, 2013, Gandy participated in a forum discussion on "Too Fat, Too Thin, Will We Ever Be Content?" The forum was headed by Vogue's editor-in-chief, Fiona Golfar. Also there were model Daisy Lowe , Patsy Kensit and Vogue employee Christa D'Souza.

Writing and other pursuits

Since February 2011 Gandy has been blogging regularly for British Vogue about his career, fashion, cars, antiques and life in London. He is also the official car appraiser for the UK GQ. In October 2011 Gandy was invited to write for London's Evening Standard as a guest author. His body has inspired the fitness industry, interviews, workout videos and his own fitness app appeared in December 2012.

After receiving a racing driver license in 2012, Gandy was invited to take part in the 2013 Mille Miglia in Italy as one of the drivers. Each year, the three-day event traverses nearly 200 Italian cities from Brescia to Rome and back, remaking the original races that took place between 1927 and 1957. He and his co-driver Yasmin Le Bon were part of the "Team Jaguar" and drove a 1950 XK120. Very early on in the race, they were pushed off the road by a competitor, which resulted in the fender and parts of the side of the classic car being damaged. They drove on anyway and finally finished the race in 158th place out of 415 cars.

On September 12, 2013 the Daily Telegraph will launch a new section entitled "Telegraph Men". They announced that Gandy will be a columnist.

Awards

Gandy received several awards in the modeling industry. In 2008 the Spanish glamor magazine named him "Most Beautiful International Male Face" at an event in Madrid . On June 26, 2009, Gandy was ranked third among the world's most successful male models, behind Matt Gordon and Sean O'Pry, according to Forbes magazine . In 2010 Gandy became the first man to be nominated "Model of the Year" by the British Fashion Council and ShortList named him "Face of Today" in 2011.

In 2011 and 2012, Gandy was included in the list of "London's 1,000 Most Influential People" in the Evening Standard . In 2012 he was nominated for the second time by the BFC as "Model of the Year". Glamor readers voted him one of the "100 Sexiest Men of 2012" and he was also voted 17th in the "50 Best-Dressed in Britain" by Gentlemen's Quarterly (GQ) magazine in 2012 . At the end of 2012, Models.com put him in 4th place in the "Money Guys" list and 5th in the "Top Icons" list.

Cosmopolitan magazine named Gandy one of "The Sexiest Men of 2013" and the British GQ named him on the 2013 list of "100 Most Influential Men in Britain". In October, Forbes updated their ranking of "The World's Top-Earning Male Models Of 2013". Gandy sees this ranking in second place behind Sean O'Pry.

Charity work

On February 19, 2010, Gandy took part in the fashion show "Fashion for Relief". The event was organized by Naomi Campbell to raise funds for the Haiti earthquake victims . On April 17, 2011, Gandy was part of the Oxglam team that ran the London Marathon to collect for Oxfam . Other members of the Oxglam team were model Agyness Deyn and fashion designer Henry Holland . In May 2011, Gandy modeled for designer Katherine Hamnett, who had designed a t-shirt, part of the sales proceeds from the Save The Sea campaign for the Environmental Justice Foundation.

In addition to model Kate Moss and designer Stella McCartney , Gandy made a guest appearance on March 23, 2012 on a special edition of the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous to support Sport Relief 2012. Three days later, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home announced that Gandy was the facility's first celebrity ambassador. In January 2013, Gandy launched Blue Steel Appeal, his charity foundation, to raise funds for Comic Relief 's Red Nose Day. The foundation, which owes its name to the film Zoolander , will be running some fundraising drives. The first auction took place on Ebay in March 2013, where some collectibles and fashion experiences donated by Victoria Beckham , Mollie King , Dolce & Gabbana , Lucky Brand Jeans, One Direction and others were auctioned .
