Modern Times Group MTG AB is a Swedish media group based in Stockholm , which is active in Scandinavia , Central , Southeast and Eastern Europe . The company's share is listed on OMX Stockholm 30 on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. MTG was formed from the media holdings of the investment company Kinnevik , which was distributed to the company's shareholders in 1997. Today MTG is a strategic and operational investment holding that manages a unique portfolio including esports companies ESL and DreamHack , game companies InnoGames and Kongregate, and digital network company Zoomin.TV.

Kinnevik distributed MTG shares to its shareholders in 2018 and in 2019, after its strategic transformation into a global digital entertainment company, MTG distributed shares in the newly formed Nordic Entertainment Group to its shareholders.

history

On December 31, 1987, TV3 started in Sweden as the first commercial TV broadcaster in Scandinavia. In 1988 broadcasting began in Denmark and Norway . The following year, the pay-TV channel TV1000 and the TV shop were launched. ZTV began broadcasting on May 1, 1992 and TV6 in 1994 .

In 2007, MTG acquired 50 percent of the shares in Balkan Media Group Limited , which owns the four Diema channels, the two Television MM channels to 66 percent and the television provider TV ERA .

In March 2009, MTG announced an agreement according to which the assets of Balkan Media Group Limited will merge with the newly acquired Nova Television to form the Nova Broadcasting Group.

On February 29, 2012, the Slovenian channel TV3 ceased broadcasting.

In 2015, Sony Pictures Television acquired the Hungarian Viasat channels ( Viasat 3 , TV6 (now Viasat 6 )) from MTG.

In October 2015, MTG sells Russian and international pay TV channels (fact, film and sports channels in Russia. TV1000 and national fact channels on an international level) to Baring Vostok Company in International and LLC Sinerdzhi in Russia.

In December 2015, MTG and the minority shareholders sell 75% of CTC Media to UTH Holding in Russia.

In December 2016, MTG sold its African business (Viasat 1 (Ghana), TV1 (Tanzania) and Modern African Production (MAP)) to the Econet Media Group.

Until 2017, MTG also operated the TV3 Group's television and radio stations in the Baltic States , which were then sold to the investment company Providence Equity Partners .

In January 2017, MTG announced that FTV Prima Holding ( Prima TV ) would be sold to Denemo Media (part of GES GROUP). The transaction was completed in April 2017.

In February 2018, the merger of the MTG business in Scandinavia (MTG Nordic Entertainment and MTG Studios) with the TDC Group was proposed.

In March 2018, the Board of Directors of the TDC Group withdrew its recommendation to merge with MTG Nordics. Modern Times Group (MTG) will be split into two companies: Nordic Entertainment Group (MTG Nordic Entertainment, MTG Studios and Splay Networks) and new MTG companies (MTGx).

In June 2018, the companies Splay Networks and Nice One of the Nordic Entertainment Group merged with the new company SplayOne.

In March 2019, the separation between MTG and Nordic Entertainment Group was completed and the Nordic Entertainment Group is listed as a separate company on the Nasdaq Nordic Large Cap.

In April 2019, MTG sold its 95 percent stake in the Bulgarian Nova Broadcasting Group ( "Nova" ) to the Bulgarian Advance Media Group.

In November 2015 it was announced that MTG had bought 100% of the shares in DreamHack . A few months earlier, the group had also acquired a 74% majority in the Electronic Sports League (ESL). Both DreamHack and ESL are - as of 2015 - among the most important international organizers of e-sports tournaments.
