A slipover (obsolete Westover ) is a sleeveless item of clothing that is a hybrid between a vest , of which it has the sleeveless shape and the way it is worn, and the sweater , of which it has the closed, buttonless shape. In contrast to the sweater, it is traditionally worn almost exclusively over a shirt and usually under a jacket . This way of wearing is also indicated by the name borrowed from the English words to pull and under (“pull under”) in analogy to “sweater”. However, this is only a sham Anglicism ; the term used in English is "sweater vest".

One of the most famous tank top wearers was Hans-Dietrich Genscher , whose yellow tank top became his trademark. The SPD politician Ludwig Stiegler also always wears a red tank top. Lately, the cabaret artist Olaf Schubert has also become famous for wearing a tank top with an Argyle diamond pattern. In addition, the rapper DCVDNS is now a famous pullover carrier thanks to his success on the Internet.

The tank top is a traditional part of clothing in golf and cricket .
