Kringvarp Føroya , KVF for short ( German : Rundfunk der Färöer ) is a public broadcaster in the Faroe Islands . The broadcaster was established on January 1, 2005 with the merger of the television channel Sjónvarp Føroya and the radio channel Útvarp Føroya and is active in the fields of new media in addition to television and radio . Kringvarp Føroya is based in Tórshavn , in the buildings that Sjónvarp Føroya moved into in 1990, and is an associate member of Nordvision , an association of state broadcasters in the Nordic countries .

history

Main building of Kringvarp Føroya

Radio Útvarp Føroya started broadcasting programs in 1957. The Løgting decided in 1969 to set up a television station, which was only founded in 1981 with Sjónvarp Føroya. In 1983 they moved into the facility, an old furniture store, in Tórshavn and regular broadcasting began on September 1, 1984.

The then Minister of Culture Jógvan á Lakjuni decided in 2004 to merge the two institutions in order to save costs in the area of administration and operation. As a result, license fees were reduced, and the only Faroese-speaking radio station in the world was able to expand its range.

After the merger, both Útvarp Føroya and Sjónvarp Føroya kept their names, even if the company behind the productions is often called Kringvarp Føroya and programs produced in-house on Sjónvarp Føroya usually have to be credited to Kringvarp Føroya. The most important in-house production on the television channel is still the news program Dagur og vika , and the radio also has its own news program Útvarpstíðindini .

On October 29, 2018, Ivan Hentze Niclasen became director of the institution.
