The 3rd Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu ( abbreviated UMK) took place on February 1st, 2014 and was the Finnish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen , Denmark .

The winner of the edition was the band Softengine with their song Something Better .

format

concept

The concept from the previous year was continued in 2014. So there were first three rounds of introductions , where the participants presented themselves to the public. This was followed by two heats, in which only the jury determined the result. One participant dropped out, while one participant reached the final. The remaining participants reached the semifinals. There only the audience decided which participants reached the final. In the final, eight participants then competed against each other, with 50% of the winner being decided by jury voting and 50% by televoting.

Choice of contribution

From July 10, 2013 to September 16, 2013, contributions could be submitted to YLE.

On September 24, 2013, YLE announced that they had received a total of 420 entries.

jury

On November 4, 2013, YLE presented the four-member jury of the UMK 2014. This consisted of the following people:

  • Tomi Saarinen (head of YLE's youth radio YleX )
  • Aija Puurtinen (singer and music professor)
  • Toni Wirtanen (heavy metal singer and part of the band Apulanta )
  • Redrama (rapper)

Introductory rounds

A total of three rounds of introductions were broadcast on December 26, 2013, December 28, 2013 and January 4, 2014. In the first round on December 26, 2013, the twelve participants were presented. There were also interviews with them and comments from the four-person jury.

On December 28, 2013 and January 4, 2014, six participants per broadcast presented demo versions of their songs. On December 28, 2013 MadCraft, Clarissa featuring Josh Standing, Lauri Mikkola, Jasmin Michaela, Hanna Sky and MAKEA sang their songs for the first time live in front of the jury. On January 4, 2014, Mikko Pohjola, Hukka ja Mama, Dennis Fagerström, Softengine, Lili Lambert and MIAU completed this process.

The rounds of introductions started in November 2013 so that the twelve participants could deal with the jury's comments and revise their songs. The final versions of the songs were presented on January 1st, 2014 on YLE Radio Suomi.

Heat 1 took place on January 11, 2014 at the Peacock Theater in Helsinki . One participant reached the final directly, while four others reached the semi-finals. One participant dropped out.

The final took place on February 1st, 2014 in the Barona Areena . Krista Siegfrids , who won the UMK 2013, presented her new song Cinderella during the break . Only the first three placements were announced.
