The 6th Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu ( abbreviated UMK) was the sixth edition of the Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu and the Finnish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev . The competition was won by the duo Norma John with the song Blackbird . The competition was held on January 28, 2017 by the Finnish public broadcaster Yleisradio in Espoo .

format

concept

After the Finnish contribution could not make it into the final in the previous years 2015 and 2016 due to insufficient voting values in the semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest , the hosting broadcaster Yleisradio announced some changes for the UMK 2017.

In contrast to previous years, there was no longer any pre-selection programs, but only a live show from the Espoo Metro Areena in Espoo in southern Finland . Like the Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2016, this show was hosted by the Finnish singer Krista Siegfrids , who competed for Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö .

Half of the entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 was chosen by televoting and half by an international jury. The judges came from Spain , Iceland , the United Kingdom , Israel , Latvia , Norway , France , Sweden , Ukraine and Estonia .

A music video was published for each of the contributions in a preview show on December 31, 2016. Viewers with a Yle user account and a Finnish cell phone number were able to vote for a contribution until January 26, 2017. In this preliminary vote, the participant Emma got the most votes with 34.0%, followed by My First Band with 15.0% and Zühlke with 12.5%.

The remaining audience votes came from the internet and televoting during the final on January 28, 2017.

Choice of contribution

The submission phase for contributions to participate in the competition began on September 1, 2016. According to the rules, at least one member of the Act must have Finnish citizenship or permanent residence in Finland. The submission phase ended on September 5, 2016. From all the applications received, an expert jury commissioned by Yleisradio selected ten contributions that took part in the final.

On November 23, 2016, the ten participating articles were presented to the press.
