The 9th Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu ( abbreviated UMK) took place on March 7th, 2020 in the Mediapolis Television Studio in Tampere and was the Finnish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ). The singer Aksel Kankaanranta won with his song Looking Back .

format

concept

After Darude and Sebastian Rejman had already been eliminated in the semifinals at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ) and had only finished last, the public broadcaster Yleisradio (Yle) considered changes to the selection process. According to a survey of 1617 viewers, 53% decided to return to the original concept of Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, a selection of ten performers with their own songs. On June 3, 2019, Yleisradio announced that they would produce UMK 2020 together with the radio station YleX. Under the direction of Tapio Hakanen , the music director of YleX, a selection of up to ten artists and their songs took place. In an interview in September 2019, Hakanen confirmed that between four and ten participants should take part in a final. The final number of participants should be based on the quality of the contributions. Hakanen would also like to reintroduce the preview shows , which were part of the preliminary decision until 2014 , so that the Finnish audience would be better acquainted with the performers and their songs.

Due to the low capacity of the Tampere TV studio , no tickets were sold for the show. However, from the beginning of 2020 it was possible to register for a seat in the audience. The voting took place via televoting, SMS voting and free of charge via the Yle.fi app. According to Yle, 120,000 users opened the app on the day of the preliminary decision. The total number of votes cast was 114,664.

Choice of contribution

From November 1 to 8, 2019, potential performers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to Yleisradio. At least one composer or producer had to be a Finnish citizen. According to Yle, a total of 426 entries were submitted. A ten-member jury headed by Tapio Hakanen selected six entries and their interpreters from all the entries. Other jury members included UMK producer Anssi Autio, director Juha-Matti Valtonen, the choreographies Reija Wäre, Samuli Väänänen ( Spotify Finland), Perttu Mäkelä ( A&R manager at Etenee Records), music journalists Ida Karimaa and Katri Norrlin, Johan Lindroos (Yle Radio Suomi) and Amie Borgar (Yle X3M).

Moderators

On January 16, 2020, the two radio hosts Ville "Viki" Eerikkilä and Juuso "Köpi" Kallio were presented as moderators of the Green Room . One day later, Yleisradio introduced Krista Siegfrids and Mikko Silvennoinen as the main moderators of the preliminary round. Krista Siegfrids moderated her fifth and Mikko Silvennoinen his third.

Attendees

The participants were determined by November 30, 2019 and were presented at a special press conference on January 21, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. ( EET ). This was broadcast live in the Yle Areena media library and moderated by Krista Siegfrids and Mikko Silvennoinen. As in the past two years, the participants and their songs were published over several days. On January 24th and between January 28th and 31st, 2020, the six performers and their songs were presented in a six-minute broadcast on Yle TV1.

final

The finale is scheduled for March 7, 2020 at 9:00 p.m. ( EET ) at the Mediapolis Television Studio in Tampere.
