The Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2018 ( abbreviated UMK 2018) was the seventh edition of the Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu and was the Finnish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon (Portugal). The competition took place on March 3, 2018 and was won by Saara Aalto with the song Monsters .

background

Application phase

Saara Aalto

In September 2017, interested musicians were able to submit contributions to YLE. According to the rules, at least one member of the Act must have Finnish citizenship or permanent residence in Finland. A total of over 300 contributions were received by the station. On November 7, 2017, however , YLE announced that none of the submitted contributions had been satisfactory. YLE said that Finnish citizens expect well-known Finnish stars, but they did not emerge from the submitted entries. Therefore, for the first time in the history of Finland at the ESC, YLE selected the interpreter internally, who was presented at a special press conference on November 7, 2017. Chosen then Saara Aalto , who already at UMK 2016 was attended and second there.

concept

After the Finnish contribution in the previous years 2015 , 2016 and 2017 could not make it to the final due to insufficient voting values in the semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest , the hosting broadcaster Yleisradio announced some changes for the UMK 2018.

The interpreter was selected internally by YLE, which means that UMK only acts as a preliminary decision on the song for Saara Aalto. A total of three contributions by Saara Aalto are to be presented in a show on March 3, 2018 in the Espoo Metro Areena in Espoo . As in 2017, the winning title will be determined by 50% international jury voting and 50% televoting. Saara Aalto said that all three titles will be totally different from each other so audiences can expect a wider range of contributions.

final

The final of Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2018 took place on March 3, 2018, 7:00 p.m. ( EET ). Saara Aalto presented three songs there, which will be released on February 9, 16 and 23, each with an accompanying music video. The song Monsters won both tele and jury voting .
