The 2nd Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu ( abbreviated UMK) took place on February 9, 2013 and was the Finnish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö , Sweden .
The winner of the edition was the singer Krista Siegfrids with her song Marry Me .
format
concept
The concept from the previous year was slightly changed in 2013. The number of participants of 12 was retained, but there were other formats for the individual programs. So there were first three rounds of introductions , where the participants presented themselves to the public. This was followed by two heats, in which only the jury determined the result. One participant was eliminated while two participants reached the final. The remaining participants advanced to the semi-finals. Once again, only the jury decided which participants would reach the final. In the final, eight participants then competed against each other, with 50% of the winner being decided by jury voting and 50% by televoting.
Choice of contribution
From September 3, 2012 to September 16, 2012, contributions could be submitted to YLE.
On September 26, 2012, YLE announced that they had received a total of 470 entries.

On November 19, 2012, YLE presented the four-member jury of the UMK 2013. This consisted of the following people:
- Tomi Saarinen (head of YLE's youth radio YleX )
- Aija Puurtinen (singer and music professor)
- Toni Wirtanen (heavy metal singer and part of the band Apulanta )
- Redrama (rapper)

On December 4, 2012, YLE presented the 12 participants of the Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2013 via a live stream.
Introductory rounds
A total of three rounds of introductions were broadcast on December 27, 2012, January 3, 2013 and January 10, 2013. In the first broadcast, all 12 candidates and the four jurors were presented. In the second and third broadcasts, six candidates each introduced themselves.
The rounds of introductions started in November 2012 so that the twelve participants could deal with the jury's comments and revise their songs. The final versions of the songs were presented in January 2013 on YLE Radio Suomi.
Heats
Heat 1
Heat 1 took place on January 17th, 2013 at Club Circus in Helsinki . Two participants reached the final directly, while four others made it to the semifinals. One participant dropped out.
