La 1 (formerly TVE 1 and La Primera ) is a television station owned by the Spanish public broadcaster Televisión Española .
The first broadcast took place on October 28, 1956, the anniversary of the founding of the Falange . During the time of the Spanish dictatorship , television was an important propaganda tool for the regime.
The audience ratings have fallen continuously from around 50% since 1990 due to competition from private broadcasters and in-house channels, and in 2008 they were around 17%.
