One of his core concerns is to bring together religious experience, piety and political theology .

South Westphalian dialect research

In 1988, Bürger co-founded a dialect archive at the Eslohe Machine and Local History Museum and initiated the publication of a work by dialect lyricist Christine Koch . He is currently publishing a four-volume series for the archive to cover all of the dialect literature in the Sauerland and neighboring areas in South Westphalia. His main focus is on the culture of the common people . In his publications on the homeland movement and Low German he also takes a critical turn against euphemistic historiography. On September 15, 2010, the cultural committee of the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe decided to award Peter Bürger the sponsorship prize for Westphalian regional studies because of his “extremely valuable contributions to Westphalian regional and dialect history” .

In 2014, Bürger was awarded the Johannes Sass Prize , and in 2016 he received the Rottendorf Prize for services to the Low German language.
