Johannes Saß (also Johannes Sass ; born September 4, 1889 in Hamburg ; † December 31, 1971 there ) was a German linguist of the Low German language . He received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg in 1926 .

Meaning for Low German

Although the written Low German language, unlike High German, is not officially standardized, Der Sass is for Low German what Der Duden is for High German - an authoritative orthographic dictionary .

The very different spellings in Low German prompted Saß to develop his own spelling rules, which he published in 1935, together with a Low German dictionary. In 1956 he was instrumental in the compilation of the - 19 - "Rules for Low German Spelling" initiated by the " Fehrs-Gilde ". This set of rules mainly followed the "Sass'schen Schrievwies" - that is, the rules established by Saß.
