RTÉ Radio 1

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

RTÉ Radio 1 is the main radio program of the Irish public broadcaster Radio Telefís Éireann (RTÉ) and is the direct successor of Dublin radio station 2RN, which began broadcasting its program on January 1, 1926 .

The transmitter 6CK, an offshoot of 2RN in Cork , merged with the Dublin transmitter in 1927, and in 1932 a transmitter in Athlone ( County Westmeath ) went into operation. From then on, the three stations were known as Radio Athlone and were renamed Radio Éireann ("Irish Broadcasting") in 1937.

Like most national radio programs in Europe at the time, Radio Éireann tried to satisfy all tastes with a single program. The program consisted of a mixture of light entertainment, Irish language programs and talks. Guest programs, which were also on the program, were more popular than the program produced directly by Radio Éireann itself.

Radio Éireann began broadcasting on FM in 1966 and was renamed RTÉ Radio that same year. When RTÉ launched a new rock and pop station under the name RTÉ Radio 2 (today RTÉ 2fm ) in 1979 , the original RTÉ Radio was renamed RTÉ Radio 1.

Radio 1 broadcasts a mix of news, current affairs, reports, cultural reports, drama, sports, music (from popular country and folk music to world music and jazz), and general entertainment. The main working day program includes:

  • Morning Ireland - the flagship news program, from 7:00 am to 9:00 am.
  • The John Murray Show - Conversation-based entertainment with John Murray following the 9:00 am news.
  • Today with Sean O'Rourke - a lively, up-to-date magazine, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Liveline with Joe Duffy - telephone discussion, 1:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Drivetime - updates, between 4.30pm and 7pm.
