List of geostationary satellites |
Astra 2D at 28.2 ° East was a television satellite of SES Global (formerly SES Astra - Société Européenne des Satellites-Astra), headquartered in Betzdorf in Luxembourg , which was designed for television reception in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
It was launched into space in 2000 from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana .
The footprint was focused on the British Isles , so reception at the edge of the footprint was often difficult.
Many British television channels, including the BBC, were free to receive via this satellite until February 24, 2012 under Freesat (trademarked name for program packages from the BBC and ITV ).
On February 24, 2012, the Astra 1N satellite, launched on August 6, 2011, took over its duties, as Astra 2D has reached the end of its service life.
reception
The satellite could be received in the British Isles, northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and western Germany.
The transmission takes place in the Ku band .
