List of geostationary satellites |
Astra-1N is a commercial communications satellite from the Luxembourg company SES Astra .
It was placed in geostationary orbit on August 6, 2011 at 22:54 UTC with an Ariane 5 ECA from the Center Spatial Guyanais together with BSat 3C . This was the 203rd launch of an Ariane rocket, the 59th of an Ariane 5 and the 32nd of the ECA version. The start was initially planned for July 1, 2011, but had to be postponed because of an iced-up valve in the system for the liquid hydrogen that had been replaced and then again briefly because of bad weather.
The three-axis stabilized satellite is equipped with 55 Ku-band transponders and is intended to provide television programs from Germany, France and Spain from 19.2 ° East. Before that, it will act as a replacement for Astra 2D at 28.2 ° East until Astra 2F can take over its place from winter 2012. It has three extendable antennas with a diameter of up to 2.6 m and a controllable top floor antenna with a diameter of 1.3 m. It was based on the satellite bus euro E3000 the Astrium built and has a design life of 15 years. The satellite was ordered from Astrium on July 15, 2008.
Many British television channels, including the BBC , have been free to receive via this satellite since February 24, 2012 under Freesat (trademarked name for program packages from the BBC and ITV).
Until February 24, 2012, the programs were distributed via the Astra 2D satellite, which had reached the end of its life.
reception
The satellite can be received in the British Isles, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany.
The transmission takes place in the Ku band .
