Freesat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freesat is a free satellite digital satellite television service for the United Kingdom . It is just an EPG. Freesat therefore has no playout centers, no satellite transponders and no uplink stations. The Freesat EPG refers to programs broadcast by various program providers and does not produce its own program content. Special Freesat receivers are able to display the EPG in full and also offer a recording function. Conventional receivers also receive the programs, but only display the EPG for the current and the following program.

Freesat is a joint venture between the public BBC and the British private television network ITV plc . The service offers a similar but not the same selection of programs as digital terrestrial television on the island, but via satellite. In addition, the possibilities of satellite broadcasting are used to offer HD TV .

Programs

Some of the around 200 channels on offer are broadcast in HD. The video-on-demand services BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub *, All 4, Demand 5 and YouTube can be used with special “smart TV recorders”. All national and some regional BBC radio programs as well as the Global channels are broadcast as pure radio channels . In addition, the programs of the Irish RTÉ , BFBS and TWR are activated.

Distribution channels

Freesat transmits its service via the same “satellite fleet” as its commercial competitor Sky : Astra 2E, Astra 2F and Astra2G at position 28.2 ° East. It is broadcast in DVB-S and DVB-S2 formats .
