Astra 1D is a decommissioned television satellite of the operator SES Astra , based in Betzdorf in Luxembourg . It was used for the transmission of television programs in Europe.

The satellite was launched in 1994 from the Center Spatial Guyanais in French Guiana .

At the time of its commissioning, the Astra 1D caused the receiving households the problem that they could not receive some Astra 1D transponders in the previously unusual frequency range 10.700 GHz - 10.950 GHz without a new LNB - which promptly led to anger among consumers about SES-Astra. The so-called "Astra 1D reception problem" has been resolved with new, compatible LNBs with a modified Lo frequency. For older satellite television receivers , switchable frequency converters were available as a retrofit solution , a mostly unsatisfactory hobby solution. Since the Astra 1D, the frequency range from 10.700 GHz has been the standard for direct satellite reception.

The satellite could be received in Europe and the Middle East . The transmission took place in the Ku band .

RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg is also broadcast on Astra 3B 23.5 ° East, which can usually be received with the same LNB, so that the shutdown was of no further importance. Astra 1D left the position in mid-April 2013 heading east.
