Astra 5A is a disused Satellite of SES Astra . The satellite was launched as Sirius 2 in 1997 from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana with an Ariane 44L together with Cakrawarta 1 .

Sirius 2

The operator was SES Sirius AB (formerly NSAB) based in Sweden. Sirius 2 broadcast programs mainly for the Scandinavian region, the Baltic States and Eastern Europe.

Sirius 2's channels were broadcast on the Sirius 4 satellite until January 2008 . In April 2008 Sirius 2 was moved to position 31.5 ° East and renamed Astra 5A.

Astra 5A

The satellite was operated by SES Astra and could be received in Europe , primarily Eastern and Southern Europe, the Middle East , western Russia and Iran . The transmission took place in the Ku band .

End of mission

On January 16, 2009 SES Astra announced that the communications satellite Astra 5A had ended its mission after an unspecified technical defect.
