SES Sirius AB is a satellite operator based in Sweden and a subsidiary of SES SA The company operated several communications satellites called Sirius .

history

The Nordiska Satellitaktiebolaget (NSAB) was founded in 1982 as a cooperation between the governments of Sweden and Norway established for joint work in the telecommunications market, Sweden were 85% of the company and Norway 15%. In April 1989, the Tele-X satellite was launched after Norway had sold its shares in the company to Sweden, the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) took over the maintenance of the satellite. In 1993, the Swedish Space Corporation took over the Nordiska Satellitaktiebolaget together with Teracom, the company responsible for terrestrial broadcasting in Sweden . The Marcopolo 1 satellite was purchased and renamed Sirius 1. In 1994 a second satellite, Sirius 2 , was ordered, and Sirius 1 was fully leased in August of that year. Tele Danmark bought 25% of the company in 1996. In 1997, Sirius 2 was successfully launched, and another satellite was ordered which was flown into orbit a year later as Sirius 3 .

In the spring of 2000, the television channels were moved from Sirius 1 to Sirius 3. In October, SES Astra acquired 50% of the Nordiska Satellitaktiebolaget , and in 2003 the group took over another 25% of the company from the Swedish Space Corporation , which still held 25%. In 2003, the satellite-based Internet supply of trains in Scandinavia began, while at the same time expansion in the Baltic States . The Sirius 4 satellite was ordered by Lockheed Martin in January 2004 , and in December the company changed its name from Nordiska Satellitaktiebolaget to SES Sirius AB . In 2007 Sirius 4 started, in 2008 all TV channels were moved from Sirius 2 and 3 to Sirius 4. SES bought further shares in the company and held 90% in January 2008, the Swedish Space Corporation the remaining 10%. In October 2008, a fifth satellite (Sirius 5) was ordered from Space Systems / Loral . In 2010 SES Astra took over the remaining 10% of SES Sirius from the Swedish Space Corporation , the satellites were renamed and the employees were integrated into the existing group. In July 2012, the SES-5 satellite (Sirius 5, Astra 4B) was launched from the Baikonur spaceport .
