O Melodie Pentru Europa is a Moldovan TV show, which serves as the Moldovan preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest . The show takes place every year in late February or early March in the TRM studios in Chișinău .

Story and concept

SunStroke Project 2017

The broadcast has been taking place regularly since 2005. Only in 2007, when TRM internally selected the song and artist, did the preliminary decision not take place.

Before the shows, Moldovan artists submit their songs, which are judged by an expert jury. The artists usually have to be Moldovan citizens, while the composers and songwriters can come from other countries. Foreign artists were only able to apply in 2015. The jury selects a certain number to be included in the live shows.

Until 2016, there were two semifinals before the final, with a certain number of performers qualifying for the final. In 2017 there was only one semi-final before the final. For 2018 the semi-finals were abolished and only one final was held.

In the live shows, a 50-50 rating from an expert jury and televoting will decide . As in the Eurovision Song Contest, the person with the most calls or the most jury points receives 12, the second 10, the third 8 points, etc. The winner then represents Moldova at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Single issues

The following is an overview of the individual issues for which no separate article exists.

2006

Before the Moldovan preliminary decision in 2006, a semi-final was held with a total of 25 participants, of which the 13 best qualified for the final. Three participants finished first with the same number of points. The rules did not provide for a solution in this case, and the preliminary decision was postponed. Three weeks later there was a new preliminary decision with five participants. Only one of these had participated in the first preliminary decision, the other four had been newly selected.

2010

In 2010, Moldovan television hosted a selection show. In two semi-final rounds and one final, the representative was determined by tele and SMS voting.

2005 and 2011

In 2005 a classic preliminary decision was held in which 15 artists took part, each with one title. The winner was determined by a jury and televoting, each with a weighting of 50%. In 2011, 20 instead of 15 songs took part. As in the debut year 2005, Zdob și Zdub won .

2012

In 2012 another classic preliminary decision was broadcast on television. A televoting was held on a television show on March 10th. The responsible broadcasting company TRM published the participating songs in advance on the Internet.

2013

In January 2013 the TRM published 49 artists on its website. A jury made up of experts and former participants of the ESC selected 24 participants for the selection shows. The two semi-final rounds took place on March 12th and 14th in the TRM studios. Six artists each qualified for the finals on March 16. From this the singer Aliona Moon emerged as the winner with the song A Million .

2014

Moldovan artists had until January 31st to submit their song to the TRM. On February 1st, the performers competed in front of a live jury on the 24 participants for two semi-finals which took place on March 11th and 13th in Chisinau. 6 of each qualified for the final on March 15th. All three shows were broadcast live on Moldova 1 and on the Internet via live stream.

2015

In each semifinals, which took place on February 24th and 26th, seven out of twelve participants qualified directly for the final via 50% jury and 50% televoting. From the entries that were eliminated, two more reached the final on March 28 through a separate televoting, which was won by the Ukrainian Eduard Romanyuta. There were allegations of manipulation during televoting in favor of Romanyutas. These allegations could not be proven and he represented Moldova at the 1st semifinals, where he was eliminated with 41 points and 11th place.

2016

The final of the Moldovan preliminary decision O Melodie Pentru Europe for Stockholm took place on February 27, 2016, the semi-finals on February 23 and 25, 2016. Contrary to the 2015 regulation, only Moldovan performers were allowed to compete.
