SunStroke Projekt (also spelled "Sunstroke Project" or "Sun Stroke Project") is a Moldovan band founded in 2008 . The formation classifies itself as house music and combines singing with violin and saxophone interludes in their English-language songs . The band has given concerts in over 30 European cities and 40 clubs. Together with the singer Olia Tira she represented Moldova at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 in Oslo , in 2017 she represented her country again at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev with the song Hey Mamma . With the song they made a significant improvement in contrast to 2010, where they landed in 22nd place, and took third place.

Band history

The formation was founded in 2008 in Chișinău by violinist Anton Ragoza and saxophonist Serghei Stepanov. Ragoza, who had attended the music college with honors, met Stepanov in the army orchestra. The band name SunStroke Project is derived from a corresponding experience from Ragoza's army days, when he was asked to cut trees with other comrades in the summer.

Together with the singer Pasha Parfeny , the formation took part in the Moldovan preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Moscow in 2009 . Before that, they had established themselves in the Ukrainian and Moldovan club scenes. When singer Nelly Ciobanu won , SunStroke Project took third place with the title No Crime .

In 2010, SunStroke Project entered the English language song Run Away again in the Moldovan preliminary round of the ESC. Parfeny had been replaced by the singer Serghei Ialovițchii. The solo artist Olia Tira also joined the band, which the year before had achieved fourth place just behind SunStroke Project. The Eurodance title with techno rhythms - sung by Serghei Ialovițchii and Tira and backed by Ragoza's violin and Stepanov's saxophone interludes - reached the final on March 6, 2010 after two semi-finals with a total of thirty starters. There the formation "SunStroke Project & Olia Tira" received the maximum number of points from the jury and a telephone vote and prevailed against 13 competitors.

SunStroke Project and Olia Tira competed with the song Run Away at the 55th Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo on May 25, 2010 in the first semi-finals. They managed to qualify for the final four days later. SunStroke Project and Olia Tira took 22nd place out of 25 starters.

With the Electro - House -Song Hey mom Sunstroke Project took part in the 2017 re-Moldovan preselection for the ESC. After a close vote, she reached first place and is allowed to compete in the 62nd Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev. They managed to get third place for Moldova . This was the first time that Moldova reached third place at the ESC.

Ragoza counts Justin Timberlake among his role models, Stepanov counts the Russian jazz saxophonist Igor Butman and Serghei Ialovițchii Michael Jackson .
