Habib Chatty ( Arabic الحبيب الشطي, DMG al-Ḥabīb aš-Šaṭṭī ; * August 9, 1916 in M'saken ; † March 6, 1991 in Paris ) was a Tunisian politician .

biography

After attending school at the Sadiki College in Tunis , he began working as a journalist at the end of the 1930s, and most recently as editor-in-chief of the magazine Assabah .

In 1955 he was appointed director of information in the government of Prime Minister Tahar ben Ammar . In 1958 he was awarded the rank of ambassador and as such became head of cabinet of President Habib Bourguiba in 1972 .

Subsequently, on January 14, 1974, he was appointed Foreign Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Hédi Nouira to succeed Muhammad Masmudi . He held this office until his replacement by Mohamed Fitouri on December 24, 1977.

In January 1980 he was elected to succeed Amadou Karim Gaye as General Secretary of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and was replaced on December 31, 1984 by Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada . In 1983, as Secretary General, he took part in the International Symposium on Common Principles, Forms and Topics in Islamic Art .
