The Nicholas Cathedral ( Russian Свято-Никольский кафедральный собор ) is a Russian Orthodox church building in the Kazakh city ​​of Aqtöbe . It belongs to the Russian Orthodox Uralsk eparchy.

The cathedral is located in the city center not far from the new Nurgasyr Mosque , the construction of which began at the same time as the cathedral. Nicholas Cathedral was built between 2006 and 2008.

history

In the summer of 2006, the foundation stone for the cathedral was laid by the governor of the province of Aqtöbe and the archbishop of Oral . They put down a marble slab with a quote from the Bible . The cathedral was designed on the model of St. Nikolai Cathedral in Orenburg .

The inauguration of the new structure took place at the end of October 2008 by the Archbishop of Oral. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev were present at the ceremony . At the request of the Bishop of Aktobe, the St. Nicholas Church was elevated to the status of a cathedral by the Patriarch of Moscow, Kyrill I. The first service was held on October 24, 2008.

The total cost of building the cathedral was 486 million tenge , while the cost of the interior was around 100 million tenge. The project was financed by donations from citizens and companies.

architecture

The building has a floor area of ​​778.46 square meters. The cathedral consists of two floors; the baptistery is on the ground floor. The building was made of monolith and then clad in red brick with a yellow pattern. Nicholas Cathedral has five domes and a 45 meter high bell tower .
