Rozhlas a televízia Slovenska (German: Radio and Television of Slovakia , abbreviation RTVS or RTS ) has been the public broadcaster in Slovakia since January 1, 2011 . It was created by merging the Slovak television (STV) and the Slovak radio (SRo), which are now organizational parts of the RTVS. Both still keep their brands. After Miloslava Zemková was voted out of office by the social democratic majority in parliament on June 26, 2012, the station was jointly run by RTVS economic director Daniela Vasinova and Peter Ondro, the previous adviser to the director for strategic and investment projects. On August 1, 2012, Václav Mika , former director of the private broadcaster TV Markíza, was elected as the new artistic director. The radio is located in the building previously used by radio on Mýtna Street in Bratislava .

The abbreviation RTS, originally drafted by the Slovak Ministry of Culture, was not implemented because there would be a risk of confusion with Radio-Televizija Srbije (Broadcasting of Serbia). On the other hand, the abbreviation RTVS is already being used by a company that charges radio and television broadcasting fees.

Radio programs

The company operates four national broadcasting chains:

In the south of the country there is also a program in Hungarian (for other minorities, the editors produce programs in other languages for Rádio Regina)

The following channels can only be received digitally (satellite, DVB-T2 , DAB + and Internet):

  • Rádio Pyramída (radio plays, literature, jazz, folklore music, humorous programs)
  • Rádio Litera (poetry, prose, sophisticated music)
  • Rádio Junior (children's program, broadcasts news, music, radio plays, etc.)

There is also a foreign broadcaster, which broadcasts content in Slovak, English, German, French, Russian and Spanish and is broadcast via FM radio, shortwave and digitally:

Podcasts and a broadcast archive are also made available online

Television programs

The following programs are broadcast:

  • Jednotka (: 1) broadcasts a full program and focuses on self-produced shows and series in the main evening. Otherwise, mainly older American series and films from Europe are broadcast. Top football and ice hockey games are also broadcast here.
  • Dvojka (: 2) focuses more on children's programs (morning program, bedtime treats), sports (ice hockey and soccer league, tennis, winter sports), magazines, documentaries and cultural programs.
  • Trojka (: 3) has existed since Christmas 2019 and broadcasts archive programs daily between 6 a.m. and midnight, mainly from the time of Czechoslovakia, the main news from: 1 is switched through, other news programs are repeated here later. A sports program was broadcast under this name between the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the 2011 Men's Ice Hockey World Championship in Slovakia.
  • Online (: O) is a popup channel that is available on the website and via HbbTV and broadcasts parallel events during major sporting events (Olympic Games, Ice Hockey World Championships). The meetings of the National Council are also broadcast in this way .

The start of a fourth program is also being prepared. At first there was talk of a children's channel, now it should be a sports and information channel called RTVS Sport, which should go on air either for the 2020 European Football Championship (if the Slovak national team successfully qualifies) or at the beginning of the 2020 Summer Olympics . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting postponement of these major sporting events, the start of this fourth channel has now been postponed.
