Grande amore is a song by the Italian boy band Il Volo , with which they won the 2015 Sanremo Festival . It was released as the first single of their second EP Sanremo grande amore . The song was also the Italian contribution to the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna .
background
Emergence
The song was written in 2003 by singers Francesco Boccia and Ciro Esposito (member of the band Il Giardino dei Semplici ) with the intention of having opera singers sing it. Boccia submitted it to the Sanremo Festival 2005 , but was rejected. A new attempt was only made on the occasion of the 2015 Sanremo Festival , this time as an entry in the newcomer category. There it was supposed to be interpreted by the Duo Operapop (consisting of Francesca Carli and Enrico Giovagnoli), which, however, was not allowed to participate for reasons of age.
As a result, the song Orietta Berti was proposed, but was not available for a Sanremo participation. Carlo Conti , artistic director and moderator of the 2015 festival, advised Pasquale Mammaro, the responsible producer and manager of Operapop, to pass the song on to Il Volo , whose own contributions had not convinced Conti; Il-Volo manager Michele Torpedine was reluctant to accept the suggestion. The members of Il Volo then changed the lyrics slightly, as it seemed stylistically outdated to them.
Sanremo 2015
Il Volo made their debut with Grande amore on the second evening of the 2015 festival in the main category and finally achieved first place in the final on the fifth evening . The vote was composed of the audience, expert jury and opinion polling jury. With a total of 39.05%, Il Volo was able to prevail against Nek with 35.38% and Malika Ayane with 25.57%. This gave Il Volo the opportunity to represent Italy in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest, in accordance with the competition rules.
