Gerard "Gerry" Ryan ( Irish : Gearóid Ó Riain ; born June 4, 1956 in Dublin , † April 30, 2010 ibid) was an Irish radio and television presenter.

Life

Ryan's father, Vinnie, was a dentist and his mother, Maureen, worked in the theater. After his compulsory schooling at St. Paul's College in Raheny, he attended Trinity College in Dublin, where he successfully completed a law degree.

Ryan began his radio career in 1979 with RTÉ . He made a name for himself as a DJ at the newly founded Radio 2, which is now known as 2FM . His morning discussion show , The Gerry Ryan Show , first hit the airwaves in March 1988. He became known to the international television audience in 1994 when he was co-moderator at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin . His television show Ryan Confidential , in which he mainly interviews well-known personalities in Ireland, will be broadcast for the sixth season in 2008. All other programs were not as successful and never reached the level of awareness of his radio show and were discontinued. Gerry has come under fire in recent years for his high salaries. It was only in July 2007 that RTÉ offered him a new five-year contract for € 600,000 per year.

Ryan was the father of five children. In 2008, he and his wife, Morah, announced the separation of their 26-year marriage.

On April 30, 2010, Ryan was found dead in his Dublin apartment.

The Gerry Ryan Show

It was one of the most popular radio broadcasts in Ireland, with almost 400,000 daily listeners. It was broadcast from Monday to Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The program was always the same. At the beginning of the broadcast, Ryan briefed listeners on the latest hot topics from the main Irish newspapers. Afterwards, the listeners had the opportunity to call the show directly for the first two hours and comment on one of the top topics or on something completely different. Often, SMS votes were also carried out on a topic. An integral part of his broadcast was the comedy series Nob Nation , which parodied everyday life in Ireland. This was produced by the Irish comedian Oliver Callan . The Irish head of government, the Taoiseach , was also caricatured. The listener had the option of downloading Nob Nation via podcast from the Gerry Ryan Show website.

In the course of the year, special events took place as part of the show. One event in 2008 was e.g. Take, for example, Operation Transformation , in which Gerry had six volunteers lose weight and get a little fitter. The listeners were able to follow the successes of the individual candidates. The campaign was accompanied by experts who shared their advice with the audience.

Ryan moderated the last hour of the show all by himself. During this hour there was u. a. Interviews, book reviews, wine tastings .

The last Gerry Ryan Show aired on May 4, 2010 as a special on Ryan's death. It was moderated by Gerry's "outside reporter" Evelyn O'Rourke.

On June 10, 2010 named RTÉ with effect from August 2010 Ryan Tubridy as the successor to Gerry Ryan.
