Life

Teodoro Mayer was born on February 17, 1860 in the port city of Trieste, then part of Austria . His father Ladislao belonged to a Jewish family from Hungary , his Jewish mother Zenobia Ascoli came from Senigallia . Mayer went to work after elementary school, where his interest in journalism and postage was aroused. In 1875, at the age of 15, he founded his first daily newspaper, Corriere dei Francobolli . In 1879 the sheet about postage stamps was replaced by the advertising leaflet Inevitabile , which he published until 1884.

At the same time, Mayer founded the daily Il Piccolo, which appeared for the first time on December 29, 1881. Despite initial difficulties, the daily newspaper reached a remarkably high circulation at the end of the 19th century. Around 1900, the articles increasingly contained political issues, particularly reflecting the opinion of irredentism . The conception and ideology of the irredentist movement were thus passed on to layers with a lower level of education.

After the end of World War I. Mayer became the 1920 Senator appointed. In 1938 the Jewish Mayer had to give up his possession of the daily newspaper Il Piccolo due to the Italian race laws ( leggi razziali ) as part of the Aryanization . He received the following awards: Commendatore (1919), Grande ufficiale (1932) and Gran cordone dell ' Ordine della Corona d'Italia (1933), Commendatore dell' Ordine dei SS. Maurizio e Lazzaro (1919).
