Johannes Herrlich (* 1963 in Bielefeld ) is a German trombone of Modern Jazz and orchestra conductor.

Live and act

Herrlich, who played in the church trombone choir from the age of ten and only later switched from the euphonium to the trombone, came to jazz through his brother. Influenced by Albert Mangelsdorff and JJ Johnson , he studied at the Musikhochschule in Graz (with Erich Kleinschuster ) and Amsterdam (with Bart van Lier ). He has lived in Munich since 1992, where he played with Dusko Goykovich , Al Porcino , the Conexion Latina and the Munich Jazz Orchestra . He also performed with Roman Schwaller , the Sunday Night Orchestra and the Jazz Big Band Grazon. He led the international hard bop jazz quintet Collage and (from 1999 to 2006) the four trombone group Trombone Fire , with which he released two albums. He also played with Gansch & Roses and performed with the Bobby Burgess Big Band Explosion . He also took part in various radio and TV productions. He has also given concerts with musicians such as Charlie Mariano , Herb Geller , Kenny Wheeler , Bert Joris , Conte Candoli , Joe Haider , Ingrid Jensen and Tim Hagans .

Since 1995 he has been a lecturer at the Bavarian Youth Jazz Orchestra. Between 2000 and 2007 he led the Big Band at Ulm University . He has been a lecturer at the Vienna Conservatory since 2007 and has also taught at the Munich University of Music and Theater since 2008 .

In 2012 he initiated a new formation in Vienna - Woody Shaw Project - in which, together with Dieter Nösig tp, Oliver Kent p, Joe Abentung b and Mario Gonzi dm, he performed several concerts in Vienna's Jazzland on these important trumpeters and who died early under tragic circumstances Composer remembered.
