Earl McIntyre

Earl McIntyre (* in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American jazz - trombone player , arranger and composer . He also plays bass trombone , euphonium , tuba and didgeridoo .

McIntyre took music lessons from his father, an amateur musician; at the High School of Music & Art he then studied trombone a. a. with John Clark , Jack Jeffers , Alan Raph, and Benny Powell ; During this time he also worked with the composer William S. Fischer and the tuba player Howard Johnson . At Mannes College of Music he studied bass trombone with Simone Karasick and tuba with Thompson Hanks , and later also arrangement with Slide Hampton and Bob Brookmeyer .

He began his music career in the early 1970s as a session and studio musician with Gil Evans , Charles Mingus , Taj Mahal , Lester Bowie , The Band , Stevie Wonder , McCoy Tyner , as tubist and bass trombonist with Carla Bley ( Social Studies , Live! ) , the George Russell Orchestra , Lou Rawls and Cecil Taylor , the Count Basie Orchestra , the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra , with whom he worked for over 20 years. He also played in the appearance of Miles Davis and Quincy Jones at the 1991 Montreux Jazz Festival, as well as on recordings by Slide Hampton ( World of Trombones , 1979), the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band , the Mingus Big Band ( Gunslinging Birds 1994), and Liberation Music Orchestra , Chico O'Farrill , Renee Manning and many other artists in the field of jazz and pop.

He has also worked as a guest conductor with the Brooklyn Philharmonic and wrote compositions for the musicians of the Brooklyn Initiative Big Band , an organization founded by Lester Bowie, Oliver Lake and others. McIntyre was also the Artistic Director of Ragtime to Broadway at New York's Town Hall .

He also arranged and orchestrated recordings by various artists such as Roberta Flack , Luther Vandross , Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy , Johnny Copeland, Renée Manning , the Mel Lewis Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, Elvis Costello , Steve Turré , Bob Stewart , Jon Faddis , the Art Ensemble of Chicago , for which he arranged big band orchestras and small group compositions. He also arranged and directed the Lester Bowie's Brooklyn Works ( Behind The Rainbow ) project. He wrote a lengthy work for Nat Adderley and Jazz Orchestra, which was performed at the Cannonball Adderley Festival in Tallahassee , and wrote arrangements for McCoy Tyner and the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and for the JJ Johnson Brass Orchestra, for which he also worked as artistic director.

While at the Brooklyn Conservatory , Earl McIntyre and Renée Manning worked on a jazz ensemble project ( Unsung Heroes ) that played compositions by McIntyre, Manning and unknown African composers.

Earl McIntyre received the National Endowments of the Arts for services in education and composition . More prices awarded him the New York State Council of the Arts , the program Meet the Composer ; he was also nominated for Most Valuable Player of The Year by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences .

He has taught at Long Island University , the New School for Social Research, and SUNY in Purchase. He currently works as a producer for the series Jazz at The Conservatory at the Brooklyn Conservatory , which features artists such as Jimmy Heath , Benny Golson and Roy Hargrove .
