William S. Fischer

William Samuel "Bill" Fischer (born March 5, 1935 in Shelby , Mississippi ) is an American musician ( keyboard , synthesizer , saxophone ), composer and arranger in the areas of fusion , soul , jazz and film music .

Live and act

Fischer began playing the piano at the age of seven and the saxophone at the age of 13. He studied at Xavier University in New Orleans, with Gottfried von Eine at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts Vienna and at Colorado College in Colorado Springs , where he obtained his master's degree in 1962. After working as a jazz musician in the 1950s, he preferred to work as a composer, arranger, producer, musical director and publisher in the 1960s and 1970s. He also taught at Xavier University from 1962 to 1966 and worked in schools in New York between 1967 and 1975; 1966/67 he was artist in residence at Newport and Cardiff College in Wales . After several compositions for orchestra and choir, he composed two works ( Concerto Grosso, No. 1 & 2 ) for orchestra and jazz ensemble in 1968/69 . In 1968 Fischer was involved in the production of The Rise and Fall of Third Stream by Joe Zawinul as saxophonist and arranger .

From the late 1960s Fischer was musical director at Atlantic Records and arranged recordings by Wilson Pickett , Les McCann , Eugene McDaniels and Roberta Flack ( Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye 1969). From the early 1970s he worked as a film composer and was also an arranger and composer a. a. worked for Gene Ammons ( The Black Cat , 1970), Herbie Mann , Roy Ayers , Nat Adderley ( Calling Out Loud ), David Fathead Newman and Johnny Hammond Smith ( What's Going On ). In 1970 he recorded the album Circles under his own name for Mann's Embryo label , a mixture of soul and jazz rock ; Contributing musicians were guitarists Hugh McCracken and Eric Weissberg , Ron Carter on electric bass and Billy Cobham on drums, plus R&B singer Bill Robinson . In 1972 the album Akelarre Sorta followed with funk versions of Basque folk songs. His compositions such as You Should've Seen The Way, Sense Of No Return or St. M were also recorded by Andy Bey and Idris Muhammad . In the mid-1970s he worked on Roland Kirk's album Kirkatron , in the early 1980s with McCoy Tyners La Leyenda De La Hora (The Legend of the Hour) and Pharoah Sanders ' albums Rejoice and Heart is a Melody ; In 1994 he was still working as arranger and producer of Nnenna Freelon's album lists .
