Boris Kozlov

Boris Kozlov (born December 5, 1967 in Moscow ) is a Russian jazz musician ( double bass , composition , arrangement ). The New York City based musician is the musical director of the Mingus tribute bands.

Kozlov initially received classical piano lessons at the children's music school for seven years; he then switched to the bass and won the Moscow Gnessin Institute competition to train on the bass guitar at the age of 15 . First under the influence of rock music and classical music, he became interested in jazz at the age of 17 and then studied double bass with Anatoly Sobolev. After graduating in 1987 with an honorary diploma at the age of 19, he had to do two years of military service in the Soviet Army , where he played tuba and other wind instruments in the military band alongside bass .

After retiring from the army, Kozlov was hired by the state studio ensemble Melodia in 1989 and recorded more than 40 albums with him and other Soviet musicians. At the same time he continued his studies at the State Music Academy. At the first USSR jazz soloist competition in 1990, he won the Grand Prix and a special prize for his original composition. After winning first place in the young musician category in the Soviet jazz journal in 1991, he moved to New York. There he worked first with Terry Gibbs / Buddy DeFranco , later with Bobby Watson , Bob Berg , Benny Golson , James Moody , Ronnie Cuber , John Stubblefield , Ravi Coltrane , Donny McCaslin , Dizzy Reece , Phil Harper , Bryan Lynch / Ray Barretto ( Simpático , Grammy 2007), Frank Lacy or Urszula Dudziak . He also performed with McCoy Tyner , Jimmy Cobb , Maceo Parker , Jimmy Smith , Henry Butler , Toots Thielemans and Clark Terry and was part of Alex Sipiagin's quartet .

Kozlov works as bassist, arranger and musical director for the Mingus Big Band and the Mingus Dynasty , with which he received a second Grammy in 2010, but also manages his own projects with which he released the solo album Double Standard (2007). Conversations at the Well followed in 2016 in their own trio with David Gilmore and Rudy Royston . He also accompanied Michael Brecker , John Blake , Lew Tabackin , David Kikoski and Jean-Michel Pilc . In 2018 he was a member of the Robin Eubanks Quartet and in 2019 of the Jack Walrath Quintet.
