Roy McCurdy

Roy McCurdy (* 28. November 1936 in Rochester , New York ) is an American jazz - drummer .

McCurdy attended the Eastman School of Music , giggging with Roy Eldridge at the age of seventeen and working with Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson . From 1960 to 1961 McCurdy played with Chuck and Gap Mangione in their band Jazz Brothers , then he was a member of the Art Farmer - Benny Golson Jazztett . after that he worked with Bobby Timmons , Betty Carter and Sonny Rollins in 1963 and 1964 . In 1965 he joined the Cannonball Adderley Quintet , where he was a drummer until Adderley's death in 1975. He has been working in the Los Angeles area since then.

McCurdy names Louie Bellson , Shelly Manne , Sam Woodyard , Buddy Rich , Papa Jo Jones , Philly Joe Jones and the bands of Duke Ellington , Jimmie Lunceford and Lionel Hampton as influences on his playing . He played with Count Basie , Wes Montgomery , Ella Fitzgerald , Sarah Vaughan , Carmen McRae , Joe Williams , Herbie Hancock , Oscar Peterson , Bud Powell , Art Pepper , Jon Mayer and with Blood, Sweat & Tears , among others .

McCurdy is an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California .
