Candice Dana Wiggins (born February 14, 1987 in Baltimore , Maryland , United States ) is a former professional basketball player. She last played in the 2015 season for the New York Liberty in the Women's National Basketball Association .

Career

college

Candice Wiggins played from 2005 to 2008 for the Stanford Cardinal , Stanford University's women's basketball team . In her freshman season for the Cardinal, she already scored 17.5 points per game. She also won with the Cardinal 32 of 35 games and led the Cardinal to the Regional Final of the Elite Eight , where the Cardinal failed at Michigan State University .

In their sophomore season, Wiggins was able to improve their points average to 21.8 points per game and led the Cardinal back to the Regional Final, where the Cardinals failed this time at Louisiana State University .

In 2007 she missed a few games due to an injury and her points average dropped to 16.9 points per game. With the Cardinal, she failed in the second round at Florida State University .

In her senior season she reached the Final Four for the first time , where the Cardinals first met the University of Connecticut . The Cardinals were able to win this game with a clear 82:73, making Wiggins the first in their career in the final of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship . In the final, she met the University of Tennessee , which was the clear favorite in the final due to its strong squad around Candace Parker . In the final, the Cardinals clearly failed with 46:64 at the University of Tennessee.

Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)

Candice Wiggins was selected third in the 2008 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx . The 2008 season was her first season in the WNBA. There she played 30 games, one of them in the starting line-up. For her achievements in the rookie season, she received the honor as the best supplementary player in 2008 and was appointed to the all-rookie team of the WNBA. In the second season in 2009 Wiggins was in all 34 games of the season in the starting lineup of the Lynx. In the other seasons with the Lynx, she was then used again mostly as a supplementary player. In the 2011 season , Wiggins was able to win the WNBA championship with the team.

After her time in Minnesota, she played one season each for the Tulsa Shock , the Los Angeles Sparks and the New York Liberty . In Tulsa she was regularly in the starting line-up, while she was used as a supplementary player in LA and New York.

Until her retirement, she played 221 games in 8 WNBA seasons in the regular season, starting 76 times and scoring 1901 points, 527 rebounds and 417 assists. In 25 playoff games (none of them in the starting line-up) she scored 73 points, 33 rebounds and 29 assists.

After her resignation, Wiggins attracted attention because she justified her early resignation with the fact that she no longer feels comfortable as a straight woman among 98% of lesbian players.

Europe

Like many WNBA players, Wiggins played regularly for clubs in Europe during the WNBA season break. She was on the field for clubs in Spain, Greece and Turkey.

National team

After she won several titles with the US teams in the junior division, she did not take part in any international tournaments with the US women's national team. She was on the winning team at the 2004 U-18 American Championship, the 2005 U-19 World Championship and the 2007 U-21 World Championship .
