Tommy Roland Shaw (born September 11, 1953 in Montgomery , Alabama ) is an American rock musician who was best known for his membership in the band Styx .

Career

Shaw attended Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, after which he moved to Chicago and joined the band The Smoke Ring , with whom he performed for three years.

Styx

In 1975 he replaced John Curulewski as singer and guitarist in the band Styx. He also composed for the band, two of his tracks from the album Pieces of Eight made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 ; Renegade at position 16 and Blue Collar Man at position 21. After the tour to the album Kilroy Was Here he left the band in 1983, which disbanded the following year. In 1996 he took part in a revival tour of Styx, three years later he recorded the album Brave New World with Styx .

Damn Yankees

In 1989 he was one of the founding members of the Damn Yankees supergroup , which included Ted Nugent , Jack Blades from Night Ranger and Michael Cartellone, who would later become Lynyrd Skynyrd's drummer . In January 1990, the single High Enough , which Shaw had co-composed, reached number 3 on the Billboard charts and the band's debut album went double platinum. In 1992 the second album " Don't Tread " was released, which was also awarded platinum, but sold significantly less.

solo

Shaw released three solo albums in the 1980s and was able to post a smaller single hit in 1984 called Girls with Guns . Together with Jack Blades, the album Hallucination was created under the name Shaw Blades . In 1998 another solo album followed with 7 Deadly Zens . He was also involved in various tribute albums produced by Bob Kulick .
