Serdar Berdimuhamedow (born September 22, 1981 in Ashgabat , Turkmenistan ) is a Turkmen politician and the only son of the incumbent President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow .

Career

For a long time there was no information about Serdar Berdimuhamedow's career. It was only with his entry into the Turkmen parliament that the son of the president moved increasingly into the focus of the Turkmen media. They also published a résumé of Berdimuhamedow.

Accordingly, Serdar Berdimuhamedow was born on September 22, 1981 as the only son of the current President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow. In 1997 he finished secondary school in Ashgabat and then studied at the Turkmen State University of Agriculture. After four years he left the university as a process engineer . In 2001 he worked for five months in the foreign trade relations department of the Turkmen Food Producers Association. Following this, he did military service from 2001 to 2003 and then returned to the Turkmen Food Producers Association, where he was charged with promoting the production and export of Turkmen wine until 2008 .

In 2008, Berdimuhamedov went to Moscow , where he studied at the Diplomatic Academy and graduated with a degree in international relations . At the same time he worked as an advisor to the Turkmen ambassador to Russia . In 2011 Serdar Berdimuhamedow left Moscow and went to Geneva , where he studied at the Geneva Center for Security Policy . However, the length and degree of his studies in Geneva are unknown. During this time he was also an advisor to the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations .

From August to December 2013 Berdimuhamedow worked for the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs as head of the department for European countries. At the end of 2013 he changed his field of activity again and became vice-head of the state agency for the Turkmen oil reserves. On November 20, 2016, Berdimuhamedov ran for parliamentary elections in Ahal province and won a seat in the Turkmen parliament. Since then, Serdar Berdimuhamedow has had an extremely high profile in the Turkmen media. He is filmed doing leisure activities with his father, such as horse riding , and he is increasingly appearing at his father's side or alone at political and social events. On October 27, 2017, Serdar was awarded the Mjalikguly Berdimuchammedow medal by his father , which is named after the father of the incumbent president. Upon receiving the award, he also rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel .

In March 2018, Berdimuhamedow was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister and appeared in this role for the first time internationally. In February 2019, Berdimuhamedov resigned from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and became deputy chairman of the regional administration of Ahal Province.

As part of a cabinet reshuffle, Serdar Berdimuhamedov was appointed Minister of Industry and Construction on February 8, 2020. The Ministry had previously been established by a presidential decree to succeed the disbanded Ministry of Industry and Communications. With the move to the ministerial office, Berdimuhamedow gives up his office in the regional administration of the Ahal province.

The wide range of positions and fields of activity that Serdar Berdimuhamedow has worked on in his career are interpreted as a possible preparation for the assumption of the presidency from his father.
