Ernest Martínez i Izquierdo (born June 11, 1962 in Barcelona ) is a Catalan conductor and composer. Martínez has earned an outstanding reputation above all for the performance of contemporary works.

life and work

Martínez studied composition with Josep Soler and conducting with Antoni Ros i Marbà at the Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona .

In 1985 he founded the instrumental group Barcelona 216 , with which he performed music by contemporary Catalan composers and by Robert Gerhard . From 1985 to 1987 he was an assistant at the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (JONDE). In 1988 he took over the same position at the Orquesta Nacional de España (ONE). A year later, at the invitation of Pierre Boulez , he worked as assistant to the management of the Ensemble intercontemporain . He has conducted various European orchestras and has performed at major European festivals. In 1996 he took over the direction of the Pablo Sarasate de Navarra orchestra in Pamplona and in 2002 he became musical director of the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya . He replaced the North American Lawrence Foster and held this position until 2006. Then he was replaced by Eiji Ōue himself. Until 2009 he was a guest conductor for this Barcelona orchestra.

As a composer, his works for instrumental ensembles stand out. Martínez also composed works such as Música per a deu violoncels i orquestra (1992, music for 10 cellos and orchestra) and Norte-Sur (1993).

Martínez made numerous recordings for the Deutsche Grammophon , Telarc , Harmonia Mundi , Col Legno , Ircam , Stradivarius and Naxos labels .

Martínez has received numerous awards. In 1995 he received the Ojo Crítico from the Classical Department of the Spanish National Radio. In 2000 he was awarded the Catalan Roland Journalism Prize for Classical Music . In 2001 he received the City of Barcelona Prize, the Latin Grammy in 2006 and the Diapason d'or record award in 2012 , the golden tuning fork. In 2006 he was appointed to the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi . The Finnish state named him the Knight of the White Rose of Finland in 2016 .
