Klaus Mäkelä

Klaus Mäkelä (born January 17, 1996 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish cellist and conductor .

life and work

Mäkelä was born into a family of musicians in 1996. His father is the cellist Sami Mäkelä, his mother the pianist Taru Myöhänen-Mäkelä. His grandfather Tapio Myöhänen is a violinist and violist. His younger sister Ellen Mäkelä dances in the Finnish national ballet. Mäkelä's wife is the cellist Senja Rummukainen. Mäkelä studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy with Jorma Panula and cello with Marko Ylönen , Timo Hanhinen and Hannu Kiiski . At the age of twelve, when he sang in the choir of the Finnish National Opera, he became interested in conducting. Klaus Mäkelä is supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben, the Pro Musica Foundation, the Wegelius Foundation, the Jorma Panula Foundation and the Sibelius Academy Foundation.

As an orchestral soloist, he performed early on with several Finnish orchestras such as the Lahti Symphony Orchestra , Kuopio Symphony Orchestra and the Jyväskylä Sinfonia . He also performed early on at Finnish music festivals such as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and the Naantali Music Festival . As a cellist he played it on a cello made by Giovanni Grancino from the year 1698. Since the 2019/2020 concert season Mäkela occurs with international orchestras such as the NDR Elbe Philharmonic Orchestra Hamburg, the Munich Philharmonic , the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra , Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France , the Orquesta Nacional de España , the London Philharmonic Orchestra and others.

In October 2018, with effect from autumn 2020, Mäkelä was appointed chief conductor and artistic advisor to the Oslo Philharmonic . He has also been the main guest conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra since December 2017 . He works with the Tapiola Sinfonietta Espoo . Mäkelä has been the artistic director of the Finnish Turku Music Festival s since February 2018 . In 2022 he is to take over as music director of the Orchester de Paris .

Mäkelä also works in the field of opera. He made his operatic debut with a performance of Mozart's Magic Flute at the Finnish National Opera . He also gave a concert performance of Erkki Melartin's opera Aino.
