In the publishing series "Documenta Ethographica" published by him, myths of the peoples of America, Africa and Oceania were compared and in some cases presented to the German-speaking readership for the first time. The series “ Hermetic Philosophy” presented biographies of important representatives of the Renaissance , who had gotten into untenable contexts in the course of growing esoteric interest. Zerling endeavored to exchange and debate between esotericism , green-alternative worldview and critical specialist science. In the process, topics from the history of philosophy , ethnology and alternative medicine , which so far only led a shadowy existence in the field of science, came into the focus of a broader readership.

Among his most important authors were the folklorist and ethnologist Michael Kuper , the ethnologist and expert on African medicine men Johanna Wagner (ethnologist) , Bernhard Kirfel and Walter Andritzky (at that time professor at the curative education faculty of the University of Cologne), the biologist and zoologist Harro Strehlow , who Environmental educator and world traveler Sigrid Lechner-Knecht and the psychologist Wolfgang Bauer . From forays into literature, the stories of the Turkish Kurd and Adelbert von Chamisso Prize winner İsmet Elçi in 1993 should be mentioned.
