action

Professor Julius Stern, his wife Ulrike and their two children Lisa-Marie, usually called Sternchen, and Paul move into their new house in Berlin. That means, the family tries to move in while the professor cannot leave his work and is not there when the moving van is in front of the door, so that it remains locked for the time being. Julius Stern is a passionate astrophysicist who enjoys international renown. Stern deals with quantum physics and has developed studies to improve the theory of relativity, which also inspire respect for his Berlin institute director, Clemens Winkelmann. The “genius” not only forgets everything else about his work, but he copes with everyday life less well. The children are amused by their distracted father, but Ulrike Stern, who is also heavily involved in her job and is therefore often overburdened, feels more and more overwhelmed. Since her husband is no support for her in unpacking the moving boxes and refurbishing the house, she gratefully accepts the help of his brother Zacharias.

When Ulrike, who works in the travel industry, is promoted to her new position, she asks Julius to pick up “Sternchen” for one time after a school trip from the train station. He promptly forgets this appointment because he has to track down an unbelievable process in his laboratory. This time Ulrike draws the consequences and demands that Julius move out. Since Paul’s confirmation is imminent, Ulrike’s mother Charlotte is traveling, which is why the Sterns go back to the perfect world for the duration of their existence. Ulrike doesn't want her mother, who had always advised her not to marry Julius, to say that she knew right away.

Strange things happen at the Stern house, however, the red racing bike that Charlotte wanted to give her grandson for confirmation disappears without a trace after the family's turtle had inexplicably appeared in the professor's laboratory. Before that, the professor's glasses and his desk chair had already made themselves independent. It is even stranger, however, when the roof tiles of the new dwelling reappear elsewhere. Julius is certain that he discovered the principle of teleportation without knowing exactly how . It is strange, however, that beaming is only possible with red objects, Paul had drawn a red circle on the shell of Anna the turtle so that it could be found more quickly. When Julius speaks to Clemens Winkelmann about his assumption, he remains skeptical, but is soon taught otherwise. And is excited like a little boy.

So it happens that Ulrike comes across Diana, her husband's assistant, in the bedroom and dismisses the explanations Julius wants to give her with nonsense. The only thing left for the professor to do is to provide evidence. So he got the idea to teleport himself to Paris, where he wanted to wait for Ulrike, who had a professional appointment there, at the airport. Then she just has to believe him. However, he does not land in the airport hall, but on the tarmac and is immediately arrested. His cell phone, which plays an important role in teleportation, is confiscated because it is suspected to be a bomb. “That would have been the Nobel Prize,” Stern mumbles to himself when he gets it back broken down into its individual parts. At least he is allowed to go because the assumption has turned out to be incorrect. Ulrike can persuade her husband to spend the next three days in the city of love. At home in Berlin, Charlotte is now moving in with her daughter, as she had already indicated.

publication

On June 21, 2002, Unser Papa, das Genie was broadcast for the first time in the ARD Das Erste program.

The film was released on September 30, 2005 by Complete Video as part of the “Only wonderful men” edition on DVD. It said: “Men are wonderful and strong. If they do have some weaknesses, that at least makes them lovable. The all-round enjoyable men's films in this edition show men in all their varieties. From hero to hypochondriac, from vain macho, ardent lover to absent-minded professor. Rational and irrational, in love and crazy. So it's no wonder that women have love but also their dear need with him. "

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv gave the film 2½ out of 6 possible stars and came to the overall result: “'Only your personal stuff is important!' Complains Ulrike, the working wife of the successful astrophysicist Prof. Julius Stern. She can't anymore, she doesn't want to anymore either. 'Our papa, the genius' is one of those typical 'actually' stories. 'The Sterns are actually a happy family,' says the press release. What follows with a few whimsical fantasy moments is the 'yes'. Friedrich von Thun tries hard. ”The critic continued:“ Friedrich von Thun still does the best he can in such a babbling story, for which producer Otto Meissner had the idea and which was working with Gabriele Herzog, Scarlett Kleint and Regine Sylvester grit his teeth to three authors at once, is able to act: he makes faxes and often looks rather stupid. "

Prisma, however, found: "Friedrich von Thun and Simone Thomalla in a charming, relaxed and imaginatively staged family film of a different kind."

The film service saw it similarly and said: “Turbulent family comedy, which owes its humor potential to the proverbial 'absent-minded professor'. - Possible from 12. "
