Born in Nordfjordeid, Langeland was from 1942 to 1944 head of the Norwegian resistance movement against the German occupation of Norway Milorg in the district responsible for Oslo . It was controversial in the post-war period, as it was very harsh against the Norwegian government and blamed the pre-war and wartime government of Norway for the occupation and criticized the collaboration of Norwegian authorities and officials.

The monument, created by the artist Frode Mikael Lillesund from Nesoddtangen , was unveiled on June 27, 2015 as part of a festive event. There were donations of 263,000 Norwegian kroner has been collected for the erection of the monument. Around the festive event, a dispute arose over the participation of a representative of the Norwegian military. After an initial commitment, the military finally canceled. Eider Mayor Alfred Bjørlo saw Langeland's strong criticism of the Norwegian government as the reason for the rejection. The Norwegian military rejected the criticism, citing Langeland's pre-war statements as the reason for not taking part, in which he allegedly expressed fears about the extinction of the white race and took a critical position on abortions. On the other hand, these statements were rated as typical of the time, which could not be used against him and his achievements.

Various members of Langeland, including those from the USA and the United Kingdom , were also present at the unveiling . The chairman of the committee formed for the erection of the memorial, John Olav Vereide, paid tribute in a speech to both Langeland's commitment in World War II and his commitment after the war. Alfred Bjørlo, the mayor of Eid, made a similar statement. On the military side, the retired Lieutenant Colonel Gudmund I. Haugen spoke.

The memorial shows a bust depicting Langeland, which rests on a high stone base. A memorial plaque is attached to the upper part of the base. The text in Norwegian reads:
