The parade ground Nordfjordeid ( Norwegian Eksersisplassen på Nordfjordeid ) is a listed former parade ground in Nordfjordeid in the Norwegian municipality of Stad . It is located south of the town center and west of the Osvegen on the north bank of the Eidselva .

Today the square has a park-like character and is used as a fairground for various events. Well known is the Malakoff Rock Festival , which takes place here regularly and has 20,000 guests. In the square is the monument to Sørgande Mor ( German  mourning mother ) and the Langeland monument to Major Oliver Langeland .

history

The place was set up in 1628 - other information indicates the year 1649 - as a military training area for the communities of Eid and Hornindal and is considered the oldest parade ground in Norway. The Nordfjord Company moved into the neighboring Osnes farm. In 1682 the place was then the practice area for the entire Nordfjord and the southern part of Sunnmøre . In 1718 the parade ground was the assembly point for the battalions for the northern Bergen Regiment. In the years 1791 to 1793 a warehouse was built that is now used as an army museum.

After the German occupation of Norway in World War II , two barracks were built on the site, one on the parade ground and another on the clay court. Up to 1000 German soldiers were housed here. In 1945 the Norwegian Homeland Security took over the place again as a training ground for Eid and Hornindal.

The military use ended in 1967. On April 30, 1976, the municipality of Eid took over the place. In 1999 the Association of Friends of the Parade Grounds Plassens venner was founded . The Malakoff Rock Festival has been taking place on the square since 2003. The musical Elskhug og eksersis , written by Tor Karseth and thematizing military life in Nordfjordeid, was performed for the first time in 2005 and has been shown regularly since then.
